A match is fire. Fire is both destruction and light…

In the spring of 2022, after the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, initiatives to protect and preserve cultural monuments began across Ukrainian cities.

Wrapped in plastic, sandbags, and plywood, sculptures and monuments became symbols of vulnerability and, at the same time, strength — an attempt to preserve memory at a moment when history itself was under threat.

Those monuments seemed to be in a state of suspended animation. Not destroyed, yet not alive. A transitional state between being and non-being. Like holding one’s breath… and not knowing when it will be possible to inhale again.

The installation “Spring Excursion 2022” is a personal archive of memory, a double safeguarding of what can be so easily lost. Memory ceases to be the past and becomes something that must be protected in the present in order to have a chance for the future.

All the matchboxes used in the work were collected at a field kitchen and in a sewing workshop where military ammunition is produced.

The final, empty box becomes a metaphor for the loss of cultural heritage destroyed by the “empire of evil” — something we will never see again.

Within the exhibition space, the viewer undertakes their own “cultural walk” between presence and absence, between what has been preserved and what has been destroyed.

When the installation is exhibited in a gallery space, a QR code allows visitors to access images of monuments and sculptures that once remained in their pre-war beauty, as they were before February 24, 2022.

Сірник - це вогонь. Вогонь - це і руйнування, але й світло...

Навесні 2022 року, після початку повномасштабного вторгнення росії в Україну, в українських містах розпочалися ініціативи із захисту та консервації культурних пам’яток.

Закутані в плівку, мішки та фанеру скульптури та памʼятники стали символом вразливості й водночас сили, спробою зберегти пам'ять у момент, коли сама історія опинилася під загрозою.

Ті пам’ятники, ніби в анабіозі. Не зруйновані, але і не живі. Це проміжний стан між буттям і небуттям. Це наче затримати подих...і не знати коли буде змога вдихнути..

Інсталяція «Весняна екскурсія 2022» - це особистий архів пам’яті, подвійна охорона того, що легко втратити. Пам’ять перестає бути минулим і стає чимось, що потрібно охороняти в теперішньому, щоб воно мало шанс на майбутнє.

Усі сірникові коробки, використані в роботі, були зібрані на польовій кухні та у швацькому цеху, де виготовляють амуніцію для військових.

Остання, порожня коробка тут стає метафорою втрати культурної спадщини, яку знищила «імперія зла», і якої ми, ніколи вже не побачимо.

У виставковому просторі глядач здійснює власну «культурну прогулянку» між присутнім і відсутнім, між збереженим і зруйнованим.

При експонуванні інсталяції в галерейному просторі, за QR-кодом можна перейти до зображень пам’ятників і скульптур, що ще збереглися у своїй довоєнній красі такими, якими вони були до 24 лютого 2022 року.
