Series of photographs “Thank you for one more day” 2022

This series was born in the spring of 2022, at a time when Kyiv lived between explosions, alarms, and the threat of occupation. When we were gaining a new bodily experience of everyday survival. At that time I stayed at home and tried to find an inner quiet that had lost its way among the sirens, within the small yet meaningful gestures of caring for myself and others. That was where life unfolded: small, ordinary, but stubborn.

The photographs preserve the flow of time through the changing objects on the windowsill: cups, plates, onion bulbs, rays of sun sliding across the glass, and the change of season outside the window. These everyday details become a diary of survival, a kind of chronicle of a time when each day felt like a gift, and the phrase “thank you for one more day” like a prayer.

From March 10 to May 6, 2022, I cooked lunches at home and took them to elderly people in my neighborhood, until the city authorities set up a support system. In early March, groceries on Kyiv’s Left Bank were scarce, vegetables were becoming a deficit. I sprouted onions on my windowsill; over time, one of them bloomed and produced seeds.

This moment became for me a powerful image of the indomitability of life that sprouts despite everything. Therefore the series is not only about documenting time, but also about faith in the force of life, which even war cannot stop.

Today these images remind me that even in times of darkness we are able to find light, to find support in the breath of the city, through fear and fatigue, in every spring to come. This is a story about gratitude to everyone who gave their life for the preservation of Ukraine’s statehood. Thank you.

Ця серія народилась весні 2022 року. В період, коли Київ жив між вибухами, тривогами, загрозою окупації. Коли ми отримували новий тілесний досвід побутового виживання. У той час я залишалася вдома та намагалась відшукати внутрішню тишу, що заблукала між сиренами, дрібними та значущими жести турботи про себе та інших. Саме там розгорталося життя: маленьке, звичайне, але вперте.

Фотографії зберігають плин часу через зміну предметів на підвіконні: чашки, тарілки, цибулини, промені сонця, що ковзають по склу та зміну сезону за вікном. Ці побутові деталі стають щоденником виживання, своєрідною хронікою часу, коли кожен день здавався подарунком, а фраза “дякую за ще один день” молитвою.

Від 10 березня до 6 травня 2022 року я готувала вдома обіди та відносила їх літнім людям свого району, доти, доки міська влада не налагодила систему допомоги. На початку березня продукти на лівому березі Києва були рідкістю, овочі ставали дефіцитом, Я пророщувала цибулю на моєму підвіконні, з часом одна з них зацвіла й дала насіння.

Цей момент став для мене сильним образом незламності життя, яке проростає незважаючи ні на що.

Тому серія не лише про документування часу, а й про віру в силу життя, яку не зупиняє навіть війна.

Сьогодні ці світлини нагадують мені, що навіть у часи темряви ми здатні віднайти світло, підтримку. У диханні міста, крізь страх та втому, у кожній прийдешній весні.

Це історія про вдячність усім хто поклав своє життя задля збереження державності України.

The exhibition presents a selection of 34 photographs by Ukrainian artists who remained in the country to document life during the war.

It features works by Olga Drozd (from the series “Thank You for One More Day”), Serhii Illia (from the series “Stand with Ukraine”), Maksym Dondiuk, Mykhailo Palinchak, Serhii Hudak, Andrii Boyarov, and Oleksandr Gliadielov.

Curated by Solomia Savchuk of Mystetskyi Arsenal, the exhibition brings together works by Ukrainian photographers who stayed in the epicenter of the war to capture and convey its stark realities.

До експозиції увійшли роботи Ольги Дрозд (із серії «Дякую за ще один день»), Сергія Іллі (із серії «Stand with Ukraine»), Максима Дондука, Михайла Палінчака, Сергія Гудака, Андрія Боярова та Олександра Глядєлова.

Кураторка Соломія Савчук (Мистецький арсенал) відібрала твори українських фотографів, які залишилися в епіцентрі війни, щоб зафіксувати та передати реалії життя у цей драматичний час.

"Війна в Україні актуалізувала насамперед ті види мистецтва та інструментальні засоби, які здатні до миттєвого відображення дійсності. Серед них — фотографія, що стала основним медіумом, який відображає події війни та висвітлює різноманіття досвідів та сьогодення українців. Цей досвід не передати словами, але його можна прожити завдяки застиглим образам, які вириваються з реальності затвором камери.

Особливого значення у процесі рефлексії гарячого потоку подій набуває документ, репортаж, хроніка. Нещадну правду холодного об'єктива оживляє чуттєвий погляд художника. Саме він перетворює пряму фіксацію на хвилюючий образ, який має велику силу естетичного впливу та створює простір для емпатії.

Працювати в полі історії — виклик. Сьогодні роботи фотографів стали частиною інформаційної війни, війни образів та наративів, де вони змушені протистояти штучно згенерованим фейкам. Зрештою, саме фотографія є одним з впливових інструментів, які несуть цю правду війни у світ і дають Україні солідарність і підтримку."

“The war in Ukraine has brought to the forefront those forms of art and expressive means that are capable of instantly capturing reality. Among them, photography has become the primary medium reflecting the events of the war and revealing the diversity of experiences and the present life of Ukrainians.

This experience cannot be conveyed through words yet it can be lived through still images that the camera’s shutter tears from reality.

In the process of reflecting on the intense flow of events, the document, reportage, and chronicle acquire special significance. The merciless truth of the cold lens is brought to life by the artist’s sensitive gaze. It transforms straightforward recording into a deeply moving image one that possesses great aesthetic power and opens a space for empathy.

Working within the field of history is a challenge. Today, the works of photographers have become part of the information war a war of images and narratives where they must resist artificially generated fakes. Ultimately, photography itself remains one of the most powerful tools for conveying the truth of this war to the world, bringing Ukraine solidarity and support.”

Ukraine continues to resist the russian invasion. The exhibition “Ukraine. Under a Different Sky” presents works by Ukrainian artists created in response to russia’s aggression. The exhibited artworks document the brutality of the invasion and appeal to the world’s conscience. This is the largest exhibition of contemporary Ukrainian art addressing the ongoing war featuring more than 200 works by 32 artists.

Україна продовжує чинити опір російському вторгненню. Виставка «Ukraine. Under a Different Sky» представляє роботи українських митців, створені у відповідь на агресію росії. Представлені твори документують жорстокість війни та звертаються до совісті світової спільноти. Це найбільша виставка сучасного українського мистецтва, що осмислює війну, розв’язану росією. До експозиції увійшло понад 200 робіт 32 художників.

Куратори: Вікторія Бурлака
